IRIS has hypnotic vocals and an ear for perfect melodies. Her song "Frozen Hearts" is about getting through the darker parts of life. It's clear that IRIS is an optimist.
How did you get started in music?
IRIS: I’ve always been surrounded by music. Ever since I was a child. I’ve been singing forever. The first instrument I learned was piano when I was 7. Then guitar when I was 8.
Tell me about the song “Frozen Hearts” what’s the story behind it?
IRIS: I wrote the song "Frozen Hearts" about overcoming downpoints in life. Everything has ups and downs. It’s anatomy. Even when we feel numb to the core, there is hope. “Things get brighter after dark.” We can survive anything.
The same message applies towards relationships. It is important to always seek a resolution for our problems whether they be created by our own inner demons, or by another person. Because we grow through everything we go through. “Nights go on and we grow up, we carry on to feel the love.”
What was a big turning point in your career?
IRIS: Making the trip to LA and meeting my current producer and business partner, Charles Lutman.
What would you say is one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced?
IRIS: Mental challenges. Overcoming my fears and insecurities. Being in LA alone with no strategy or contacts to make my dreams happen.
What has been inspiring you lately?
IRIS: The people around me, culture in LA. It is completely different to New Zealand.
What’s your best piece of advice for young women?
IRIS: Follow your heart and your dreams. Take risks and grow from your mistakes. Everything is helping you get closer towards your goals.
