I've been obsessed with LØLØ's aesthetic and in-your-face honest lyrics. She has this ability to create these outlandish ideas and make them somehow feel so specific to you. Relatable with a hint of whimsy. Her new project, "falling for robots and wishing i was one" is an intricate world ready to get lost in. We talked to her about the inspo behind her music and what keeps her motivated.
Tell me about how you got started in music?
LØLØ: From a young age I knew I wanted to perform– I would watch Shirley Temple videos with my grandfather that he’d put on, and was very obsessed with her and wanted to be her. So I made my mom put me in tap dancing classes, acting classes, and singing classes. I later on became obsessed with Green Day, Avril Lavigne & Hilary Duff. Which honestly makes sense looking at how my music is today. Back then, I really wanted to be on Broadway. That remained my end goal until I was in high school, when I picked up guitar and my guitar teacher forced me to try writing a song (I did NOT want to). But then once I tried, I LOVED IT and that was when I knew I wanted to be an artist/songwriter.
Tell me about falling for robots and wishing i was one, what was the story behind this project?
LØLØ: I wrote “u & the tin man” in 2021 and knew it was a really special song. I didn’t want to just release it as a ballad on an EP and have it overlooked. So I kinda kept it in my back pocket, saving it for one day when I put out an album, but not knowing exactly what I was going to do with it. I just knew it was supposed to be part of something bigger. Then a couple years later, I wrote “wish i was a robot” and I thought it was funny how I make fun of robots in “u & the tin man,” but envy them in “wish i was a robot.” That’s when I realized that conceptually, it would be really cool if I made an album about both sides of the coin. So every song on the album is either about falling for robots (falling for emotionally unavailable, insensitive, numb people) or wishing i was one (wishing I wasn't so emotional, sensitive, etc)
What, besides music, has been inspiring you lately?
LØLØ: I actually find a lot of inspiration from TV shows & movies. I just recently started watching the Planet of the Apes trilogy and I'm obsessed.
What songs are your favorites to perform live?
LØLØ: “hot girls in hell,” because I love when people think I’m doing a ballad and then all of a sudden I’m like, “YOU’RE FUCKING DISGUSTING” and they’re like “OH SHIT”. I love seeing people’s faces haha. And then I also love performing “junkie” because it feels really good to belt that song out.
What artist has been on rotation for you lately?
LØLØ: Sabrina Carpenter is my current obsession.
What has been one of the biggest challenges for you in your career?
LØLØ: Figuring out my sound. I LOVE to write sad depressing ballads, but at the same time, I love to perform fun upbeat songs. It’s a constant battle!!!
What keeps you motivated?
LØLØ: My friends & family for sure. Some days I want to give up but it’s nice to have people reminding you that you don’t fucking suck!
What's your best piece of advice for young women?
LØLØ: Don’t give up! Keep your head up & keep doing you. There’s no one else that can do you better than YOU. Don’t listen to what other people say (I KNOW THAT’S EASIER SAID THAN DONE) but try to tune all the assholes out <3
