How did you get started in music?
RJ: Music was always around the house and I did a lot of musical theater shows as a kid. After a couple years of singing other peoples music I knew I wanted to create a sound for myself and write my own songs. Tell my own stories.
Tell me about your song “What You Need”
RJ: WYN is about not needing lots of material things to have a good time. To live in the moment and enjoy yourself. From a musical standpoint, it’s uptempo with a funky bass line and live horns.
What inspires your songs?
RJ: Sometimes a girl, sometimes the beat we’re making and sometimes another song. Could be anything. Inspiration comes from the wildest places.
What has been the highlight of your career so far?
RJ: I got to play an arena in Mexico. That was pretty cool. Getting to travel and do what I love is the highlight of every day.
What are you doing when you’re not doing music? What are your hobbies?
RJ: I hike, see films, update the wardrobe and I love a good fighter video game.
What’s your best piece of advice for a musician just starting out?
RJ: Work hard and don’t get lazy. No matter how good you are you can always be better. Make a list of short term goals and long term goals. Then cross them off as you achieve them.
