Catina is someone I was ecstatic about interviewing. As a Chinese American, it’s always been hard for me to find a Chinese artist with music I like. When I heard Catina’s single, “Stronger,” I knew I had to talk to her. This song is the perfect one to add to your Girls Night Out playlist or if you want to just feel empowered getting ready.
Catina tells me she got started in music fairly early. “I’ve always loved music my entire life. My parents tell me I sang all around the house before I could even speak.” She says, “I remember before I learned English, I would go to the music stores and memorize music from Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, Etta James, Nina Simone, Celine Dion. I had no idea what I was singing, but I could feel the music!”
She says over the years as society has evolved, breaking into the scene wasn’t hard for her. “I think we become more and more color blind. I truly believe quality music always rises to the surface to be discovered.” She tells me she’s proud to be from Mainland China. “I’m so blessed to be embraced by America and Europe. Thankfully they’re all connecting with my first single, “Stronger,” says Catina.
Stronger peaked at #12 on the Billboard Dance charts. Catina is thrilled and she has good reason to be. “I was told that I am the first ever mainland Chinese artist to ever make a Billboard chart. It’s a big deal for me and I am so proud.”
While success might be new for the artist, she tells me she’s already completing the finishing touches for her first English album set to drop next year. Catina also has a passion for fitness and health. “I love to stay in shape,” she tells me. “I always find time to practice Muay Thai and spar with my trainer. If I didn’t pursue music, I would probably be doing something in fashion. I graduated from the London College of Fashion so I think I’d put that degree to good use.”
2018 is going to be a big year for Catina. “It will be amazing,” she says. “I’m so excited to share the album I’ve been curating and putting together for the past 2 years. I’ve been able to create a new sound that has influences from my heroes and infused with my culture. I’m so excited to introduce this sound to the world.”
