laye has the most distinctive sound, a true original, and her latest project "lonesome" embodies the multi-faceted idea of loneliness. We talked to her about the biggest challenges she's been facing and how she stays motivated.
How did you first get started in music?
laye: I ultimately wanted to be able to sing my own songs. I always liked singing and so I picked up a guitar and started putting my own poems to chords and rewriting them.
Q: What’s your favorite part of performing?
laye: Seeing people in the audience singing my words.
Tell me about your album lonesome, what’s the story behind it?
laye: All the songs just had this overlapping theme of loneliness. Whether it was about being lonely, the fear of being lonely or the lyrics including the word ‘lonely’, the album just really formed itself around that theme, and ‘lonesome’ had a lovely sound to it that made me certain of it.
Is there a particular song that is really personal to you?
laye: “more” would be the most personal one for me.
What has been the biggest challenge in your career?
laye: I guess the uncertainty of things. You’re working towards unknown goals. You’re working but you’re also following your passion and hoping that others enjoy your work, which is usually very personal so it's odd.
What keeps you motivated?
laye: Seeing the progress I’ve made- there are a lot of downs, but when good things happen you need to hold on to them and envision more positivity and accomplishments in the future.
What’s your best piece of advice to young women?
laye: Be nice to other women. C'est facile!
