Erin Bowman is our queen of relatability, her new song "Apartment 101" is a capsule of a specific time in her life, we all have good and bad memories attached to certain places and for Erin, looking back on that place brought harsh reflection and healing. We talked to Erin about the song and her new music direction.
How does it feel to have Apartment 101 out in the world?
Erin: Amazing! I had been working on those songs for close to 2 years. Feels good to finally put them out into the world.
This sound is really different for you, why did you go in a different direction?
Erin: I had been through a lot. My life was changing quite a bit. Lots of new challenges and experiences. I made it a point to get better at playing guitar and the songs just started pouring out of me.
What does the song mean to you?
Erin: Apartment 101 is the gem for me. Lyrically it is about someone specific but it’s honestly just about life. He’s interchangeable. The point of that song is that life is about learning. What you don’t know at one age you learn down the line. That never stops. And that’s ok.
What has been inspiring you lately?
Erin: I listen to mainly older music. I love the bands from the ’90s, The Eagles, Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morissette, the Beatles. I had been listening to a lot of those over the past couple of years and I feel like all of those really inspired this EP.
What has been one of the biggest challenges in your career?
Erin: I think listening to other people too much. Writing a certain kind of song because you think people will like it, people will play it. Having ideas thrown at you and feeling like you need to do certain things. Help is always ok but only when it feels right. I’ve gone against my gut feeling too many times... in music and in my personal life. I’m not doing that anymore.
