Gillian is incredibly talented and we’ve been a huge fan of hers at the New Nine for so long. We’re thrilled to premiere the music video for “High”! The song is taken by raw emotions that Gillian knew we and her listeners would relate to.
Gillian, tell me the inspiration behind High?
Gillian: Like most of my songs, “High” is inspired by real emotions, although not every lyric is true to my own life. In the relationship I was in, I had a moment where I felt like the guy I was dating was detached and constantly at parties with his friends rather than being there for me when I needed him. I took this momentary feeling and channeled it into “High.”
What are you doing to practice self care during this time of social distancing?
Gillian: I’ve spent a lot of time talking to friends on FaceTime and I’ve spent more time taking care of myself. I’ve found myself reading and listening much more often too. I feel like, though these are very difficult times, I’ve finally had time to reflect on myself and my music, looking to improve myself.
What is your creative process like? How do you like to create your music?
Gillian: I strongly believe that music should come from a place of authenticity, so I never force myself to write a song. I only write when I feel truly inspired to do so. My songs usually originate from one or two lines, and I’ll build the rest from that.
What are some of the artists you're currently listening to?
Gillian: I’ve recently been listening to a lot of genres. I usually listen to pop like Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande, but recently I’ve started listening to R&B artists like H.E.R. and Ella Mai. I also love Travis Scott, J. Cole, and my all time favorite, Amy Winehouse.
What are you looking forward to this year?
Gillian: Later this year, I might have the opportunity to open a few shows for one of my favorite artists… I can’t say who yet but it would be a dream come true. I also can’t wait for the release of the rest of my singles and, eventually, my upcoming album, 3AM.
