Gavin Haley has been on tour with Ashe and Charlie Burg and the crowd has been nothing short of stoked to see him, at the iconic Troubadour in Los Angeles, you could see the audience mouthing the words to his songs and tapping each other when their favorite came on. His songs are heartbreaking and emotional but at the same time hopeful. We talked to Gavin about his start in music and his songwriting process.
How did you get started in music?
Gavin: I picked a guitar up when I was 14 and learned a few chords. I loved covering other songs but when I was 17/18, I started writing my own music.
What was the moment where it became your career?
Gavin: I signed with RedBull Records in 2018. That is when it really became my career.
How has the tour with Ashe been going?
Gavin: It’s been a blast. I’ve seen a lot of new places and the shows are really fun!
“Long Game” is such a gorgeous song, what’s the story behind it?
Gavin: A breakup… haha.
What is your songwriting process like?
Gavin: I hear a melody in my head, generally a lyric or a story, and I want to get it out. It’s never exactly the same but I have a few ways that I like to song write.
What has been the biggest challenge for you in your career?
Gavin: Being away from my family for such long periods of time. Music is beautiful but I spend most of my time on it. My little siblings are growing up fast and it’s tough to not be there.
What keeps you motivated?
Gavin: Good music. Creating. Stadiums.
What’s your best piece of advice to a young musician?
Gavin: You get to choose who you take advice from. Don’t listen to anyone who says you can’t have something. Make what you wanna make and be yourself.
