Our favorite things in the world are shimmering dream pop and angelic vocals and Brooke Sierra has both in spades. Her song "Mint" has been making the rounds on all of the playlists and the song makes us feel like we're in love. We talked to her about what she has in store for us this year.
How did you get started in music?
Brooke: Honestly, there was never a specific moment in my life when I realized I wanted to pursue music. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always known it’s what I want to chase after and spend my life doing. I’ve sang and played piano since I was a child, and taught myself to play the guitar when I was in 8th grade. There’s even home videos from when I was 3 or 4 years old singing made up songs and telling the camera I wanted to be a rockstar when I grew up. Music has always been a huge part of my life and as I’ve grown older and it's only become more and more clear to me that it is what I want to do with my life.
Tell me the story behind your song “Mint”
Brooke: Mint was written with my close friend Joey Spurgeon who plays a huge part in the production and writing of all of my songs. It’s a song which reflects on choosing to deal with your problems and rough times in life by not dealing with them at all. Being completely self-aware of what you’re doing, but not caring because it seems easier in the moment. This song captures a feeling that I believe most of us have felt at some point and are able to relate to.
What else has been inspiring you lately?
Brooke: Honestly, looking back on my life over the past few years vs. where I am now has brought me so much inspiration lately. I was in such a different place each year prior to now, and seeing how much I have grown and overcome has brought me a different perspective and positivity that I’m hoping to instill in my listeners. The songs I’ve been writing lately have been focused on capturing the good that can come out of the bad. They’re more set on encouraging and inspiring those listening, hoping to show them that no matter how bad things may seem, it can and will get better.
What keeps you motivated?
Brooke: I’ve found that taking time to remind myself of my love for music is a crucial part of staying motivated. There are definitely times when I feel doubtful and it seems like my hard work isn’t paying off, but whether my music is being accepted or not isn’t the reason why I’m pursuing music. Spending time in music solely to enjoy it is something that always refreshes my mind and reminds me of the reasons why I am doing what I am.
What do you have coming up? Any new projects?
Brooke: Currently, my team and I are finishing up two more singles before solely focusing on my debut EP. I’m also working on my live set and planning our debut show in the near future.
What’s your best piece of advice to young women?
Brooke: Just stay true to yourself. As cliché as this may sound, it’s something that I’ve constantly been faced with and cannot emphasize enough. There will be people who try to change you, and even tell you that you aren’t good enough. However, knowing your worth and the power that comes with being yourself is something that no one can ever take away from you. Don’t let anyone ever tell you that you aren’t good enough, and never let anyone’s opinion change you. There will always be people out there who disagree with you, though no matter how hard you try, you can’t please everyone. Realizing and accepting this will liberate you from a world of hopeless people-pleasing, and will allow you to confidently embrace who you truly are.
