Alt Bloom, the brainchild of Ethan Thompson, makes dreamy soundscapes that are perfectly accented by his knack for poetic storytelling. We talked to the up-and-coming artist about new music and what's been inspiring him lately.
How did you get started in music?
Alt Bloom: I’ve been doing music since I can remember. My parents had me and my two older sisters in lessons since we were kids. High school is when I started writing music and freestyling with my homies. We used to sit on top of a restaurant we played at on the weekends and smoke and rap for hours. They taught me my first sense of exploring music as a source for expression of life.
Tell me about your song “West Coast” what’s the story behind it?
Alt Bloom: It’s about living in the city and working and grinding, then having this person come into your life and trying to decide what to do. It’s me asking, ‘Do I jump into this, or do I fight off those feelings and just keep doing my thing?’
What else has been inspiring you lately?
Alt Bloom: Victoria Monét, Still Woozy, Frank Ocean, and living life from parties to exploring the mountains to hanging with friends and family.
What’s been your biggest challenge in your career?
Alt Bloom: Loving myself. In today’s day and age it’s so easy to compare your journey with someone else’s and think you are doing something wrong in life. The truth is there are countless ways to live and everyone’s serene is going to look different and come at a different point.
What’s your best piece of advice for your younger self?
Alt Bloom: Do your thing the way you feel it. Everyone is going to have an opinion at the end of the day and everyone is making those opinions up just as much as you are. So, follow your own heart rather then someone else’s.
