I’m sitting at Verve in West Hollywood and a young woman with the most vibrant red hair I have ever seen walks in and grabs my attention. That’s the kind of impact Kara has on people. Much like her music, she leaves a lasting impression.
She tells me she was always writing music. “Ever since I was little, I would make up songs like while I was on my way to the bathroom and I just remember my parents would laugh at me. But as long as I could remember, I always loved performing.”
“I didn’t get serious about songwriting until college. I realized that this is something that could grow into a career. I was acting professionally before becoming a singer so this was the perfect mix. I can perform on stage while singing the songs I write.”
Kara’s inspiration and sound isn’t specific to one genre, but if you were to narrow it down to three, it’s a mix of pop, folk and country. “I love artists that form their own sound - especially the ones in between. Growing up, I listened to Shania Twain and I just love Taylor Swift.”
We gush about the Red album for a while before discussing her single, “Other People.” “The single was inspired of the moments when you get out of a relationship and how strange it is that the other person is still out there living, but you aren’t living the same lives.”
“I don’t want it to be devastating at all, but isn’t it so strange that one day you were doing everything together and the next you can see them with someone else. I just wonder if they’re living the same life like, “Do they still call their mom every day?”
“You see them on social media and their new life, and you’re happy they’re happy but then it leads me to wonder if exes can be friends.”
Along with maneuvering relationships, Kara’s also dealt with being a woman in music and her advice for any female is, “I want women to know their worth.”
“A lot of men think they know what’s best for young women, but I want women to know they’re smart enough and capable and can challenge to do so much more than they think. They really can change the world.”
Kara will be releasing her album in May, but I don’t think that’s the last we’ll hear from here this year. She’s already planned her vision for more singles to follow. Stream “Other People” now.
