Georgia Ku has the clearest, most effervescent voice we've ever heard. It's like glass. Her knack for melody is uncanny and she's penned some of the biggest pop-hits, but now, it's her time to shine. We talked to Georgia about how she got started in music and what keeps her going.
How did you get started in music?
Georgia: I have been singing since I can remember and music has always been a big part of my life. Growing up, my Dad had a very eclectic music collection, from The Fugees to Radiohead, Stevie Wonder & Bob Dylan.
Tell me about “Ever Really Know” what’s the story behind the song?
Georgia: I was going through a really rough patch in my relationship, after going back & fourth so many times, I was questioning if the person I fell in love with was who I thought they were. The day I wrote it, I didn’t really have a title, the song came from me spilling out everything I was feeling at that moment & telling my story.
The video is gorgeous, where did the idea for the visuals come from?
Georgia: Thank you so much! An amazing director based in NY called Mariah Winter, it was our first time working together but her treatment stood out for me. We really clicked & I believed in her vision.
What else has been inspiring you lately?
Georgia: I think seeing my friends get grammy nominations & number ones! Talent speaks for itself & I’m so proud they are getting the recognition they deserve. Also, I’m gonna be honest, taking time for myself reboots my inspiration, it’s so easy to get burnt out in this industry so it’s really important to take days off or go & do something else creative or that simply brings you joy!
As someone who writes for other artists, is it hard to be behind the spotlight sometimes?
Georgia: It’s definitely more pressure, more so pressure that you put on yourself. I had to really train myself to not overthink everything (I still do!)- but when it comes to writing I have to just focus on writing a great song, and if it feels undeniably right for me then I’ll keep it.
What is your best piece of advice for young women in the music industry?
Georgia: Believe in yourself! It’s a tough industry to crack & if you want others to believe in you, you have to be confident in your talent. Secondly, don’t give up! I was, and still am, a girl with a big dream & I wasn’t going to let anyone or anything stop me achieving my goals, I hustle really hard & although there are times I when you want to throw in the towel, if you stick with it, the hard work WILL pay off. Lastly, always be open to keep growing & be yourself! People love authenticity & in a world that’s so heavily filtered, it’s so refreshing to be able to connect to people, even through a phone screen.
What else do you have coming up this year?
Georgia: I have a couple of features coming out very soon. I have my next 3 singles already written so we are finishing them up & setting release dates for this year, along with my EP that I’m working on right now.
I’m excited to play more shows & connect with more fans!
