Jacob Asher, from Joywave, is exploring new depths in his solo music. His sound is layered, effortless melodies laced with hip-hop and hyper-pop elements to create a sound that is completely original. We talked to Jacob about his distinctive sound and how he's keeping sane lately.
How did you get started in music?
Jacob: Mandated piano lessons when I was a child, although I’ve had several “starts” with music throughout my life.
What inspired you to do a solo project?
Jacob: Finally feeling ready. I had wanted to do it for so long, but everything I was doing led me to this point. Nothing like sitting down and having something to write.
How do you want your listeners to feel when they listen to your music?
Jacob: Free!
How have you been staying sane during self-isolation?
Jacob: Stepping outside each day, making fresh pasta, making music, reading, FaceTiming loved ones.
What has been the biggest challenge for you in the music industry?
Jacob: Being outnumbered. There are so many people making great music, now more than ever. And not being an influencer.
What has been inspiring you lately?
Jacob: The circumstances we’re all under have been providing a lot of material for my mind. We take a lot for granted.
What’s your best piece of advice for young musicians?
Jacob: Keep going, make whatever you want to make. And if it isn’t music that day, go paint, build, just create.
