If you’re looking for your new favorite chilled out pop fave, look no further. Shoffy is exactly what you’re looking for. On Shoffy’s latest album, Flash he showcases not only his versatility in music but also his ability to smoothly collaborate with other artists and sounds. He blends his style with Sabrina Carpenters on the track “Tricky”.
Now, during social distancing, is the perfect time to put yourself in the right headspace and dive into this album. We had the chance to ask Shoffy some questions about his album, collaborations, and more. Here’s what you need to know:
In one sentence, how would you describe your music to someone who’s never heard it?
Shoffy: Chill pop/electronic music with a lot of guitar.
What sets your music apart from the pop industry right now?
Shoffy: I think it’s pretty left leaning pop. A combination of the sounds, lyrics, and melodies give it a unique vibe. Also, I try to include guitar and blues solos in a bunch of my stuff, which I think is pretty different.
What do you hope fans take away from your music as a whole and/or Flash?
Shoffy: I just hope they enjoy it. It's always moving to hear if the music helps them get through something they are going through, inspires them in some way or has had an impact on them. I get messages like that pretty much every day and it’s surreal. Really makes it all worth it.
The music has some songs about being a “homebody” or being “home alone” and that turned out to be pretty fitting with everything going on now.
How was writing your album, Flash, different than writing your prior works?
Shoffy: I had more collabs on this one than previous stuff including co-writers and co-production as well as features. For Flash I was setup with more sessions and got to work with a lot of different people which was fun. At the end of the day, I think the sound still feels like me because I wrote, co-wrote, produced, or co-produced every song.
What is your personal favorite song off of your latest album? Which song are you most excited to perform live?
Shoffy: I’m never good at answering this question! It’s always hard to pick a favorite. It is interesting though to see which songs really react with people and rise to the top. At the moment, some songs I’ve been practicing performing include “I Can’t Help,” “Temporary” and “Tricky.”
Where do you draw from when songwriting?
Shoffy: Personal experiences, hearing stories from my friends, songs I’m listening to, movies/tv, books, the news, just day-to-day life.
What is your favorite part of the song creation process?
Shoffy: When I finish the song! It’s like putting a puzzle together and when it’s finally wrapped up you definitely feel a sense of accomplishment.
What was it like working with Sabrina Carpenter on “Tricky”? Did it come naturally?
Shoffy: A lot of fun. She was really amazing to work with and down to earth. We had a couple sessions in the studio and I recorded her vocals. My team sent her the song and she was excited to a be a part of it – so we got together and locked it in pretty soon after that. I've been a fan of Sabrina for a while now, so it was really cool to connect on something!
Moving forward, who are some artists you would like to collaborate with?
Shoffy: John Mayer, BENEE, MARINA, Frank Ocean, Cyn.
With your tour having just been postponed, what are you most looking forward to on the road?
Shoffy: Connecting with the fans in person again and getting to meet everyone after the show!
Where do you see yourself and your music in the next 5 years? What are your biggest bucket list items?
Shoffy: I plan to release a few more albums and hopefully have a bigger platform to get my music out there. Would also like to expand my label Otherground Records, and build out the business side more.
What advice would you give to young musicians who want to do what you’re doing?
Shoffy: Stay persistent and keep at it. Find a great team that is just as motivated to build with you as you are.
Are you working on anything new during this quarantine time?
Shoffy: Yes! Working on the next album. Definitely a good time to be working on music since I’m stuck at home.
Is there anything else you want our readers to know?
Shoffy: Stay healthy/safe out there! Hopefully, everything will be back to normal soon.
