We fell in love with FLAVIA's new song "Hateful" there's this dark sound to it, but it's undeniably catchy. It tackles the important issue of bullying, she's not afraid to shy away from a tough subject. We chatted with her about finding her sound and sticking to her guts.

How did you get started in music?

It's ALL I've ever wanted, from a freakishly young age, and I never looked back. It honestly didn't feel like I even had a choice in the matter.

What have been the biggest challenge you’ve face so far?

It feels like the challenges are ever changing and as an artist you're constantly evolving to figure out how best to navigate this industry, and your artistry. There was a time when I thought all I needed was a team: a manager, a label, a band, the right producer. So you sort of wait for those to fall on your lap. I was tired of waiting, so I figured out that I had all the tools I needed, and the ones I didn't I would learn. These struggles made me the incredibly powerful force that I am today. 🙂

Tell me about your song Hateful, what’s the story behind it?

Hateful is about real experiences in my life. My reflections on such painful experiences opened the way to the larger issues of animosity, division and bullying in our society. This powerful song stands for kindness, strength, and human connection. I hope to reach out to victims of hatred and bullying and remind people to treat others with love and respect.

How did you find your sound as a musician?

It is a never ending road of discovery. For a long time I was on the hunt for "the right producer", hoping someone would understand the vision in my head, or just magically deliver me "my sound". It didn't happen. And naturally, I was very frustrated. So I went into a 3 month "cave period" to learn how to produce and started creating some of my best work! From there was born my sound.

What was it like performing at SXSW this year?

SX.WAS.INCREDIBLE. I honestly can't believe all the amazing connections I made, artists I met and opportunities that came out of it! Actually, Awesomeness TV saw me at SX and now they're premiering a live video for Hateful that is also being released today!

What was the most defining moment of your career so far?

When I realized that I didn't need anyone else to make my career for me, that I was already doing it.

What’s you best piece of advice for young women in music?

LISTEN TO YOUR INTUITION. Sometimes that voice is so tiny in there, that it's almost non existent. Magnify it, trust it, follow it and be strong. Our time has come. <3
