When I was almost 25, I decided to take a huge risk and start my own music blog. I wanted to give more women a chance to write about the music they love, I wanted fangirls to be taken seriously, and I wanted to uplift women in music. With the help of Grady Moore, I ventured out to start The New Nine, a name based on the Greek muses and a mission to empower fangirls, and after 8 years, it's time we say goodbye.
I am incredibly proud of the work we've done over the last 8 years: about 2000 interviews, 1000 concert reviews, over 20 festivals attended, playlists made, countless social takeovers, and, of course, tons of content. We were first on the scene to sing the praises of artists Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, and Chappell Roan (and literally so many more). We had conversations about the challenges facing young women in music, we've moderated conversations on fangirls in the music industry, and we've continued to always fight for more women in the scene.
Most importantly, though, we've made friends and connections that we've had all these years. Twitter friends turned to real-life friends, girls across the country formed a network and a love for music, we discovered new artists together, and we built a community. This is the thing I think we're proud of the most: the memories we've had together. We were the little blog that could, and it took a lot of work. Work that we no longer have the capacity to maintain, but we're leaving with the intention to make way for the future of fangirls. In the past few years, we've seen a rise in pro-fangirl content, and we'd like to think we played a part in that. We're now fangirls who work in the industry and we'll always continue to fight for the fangirls across the world.
We will always be immensely thankful to everyone who contributed to this site and to the people who have supported it. This was a true labor of love, and it's so hard to say goodbye, but it feels like the right time. I hope in some small way, we made a difference, and we'll always be proud of the work we've done.
