Ghita (pronounced like "Rita) was raised all over the world. She spent time in Spain, Morocco, and Switzerland and that multi-cultural upbringing comes through in her music. Her song "Brand New" features her effortless voice over an intricate pop sound. We talk to her about her new music and what has been inspiring her lately.
Tell us about “Brand New”... what inspired the idea behind the video/song?
This track holds a special place in my heart as one of the first songs I ever wrote. I was going through a pretty difficult break-up and was in a weird mental space at the time. Writing “Brand New” was a way for me to sort through this feelings without creating a typical F You track.
What has been your favorite part of your creative process?
Music is a safe space for me, it’s a place where I can go and really sort through what I’m feeling in the moment. The inspirations behind my music are my real life experiences. I really love getting into the songwriting and creative process and start sorting through everything I’m feeling.
How has your multi-cultured background and experiences in different countries influenced who you are as a musician?
Growing up in these places really shaped me into who I am today. As you can hear, my accent is a bit French because I went to a French primary school. One of my first memories of music is hearing Moroccan drums being played, and I think my music infuses a part of everywhere that I’ve lived into it. I knew I always wanted to be an artist and growing up there were never any role models to look up to in the music industry that were from Morocco, so I want to be that inspiration for all the young girls back home that are looking to follow in my footsteps.
What are you listening to right now?
I’ve been listening to this singer, Bazzi, a ton lately. I love his vibe and his single “Mine”. I also always have Rihanna and repeat.
What’s the greatest advice you’ve received as an emerging artist? Is there any advice you wish you would have received prior to this adventure?
Someone once told me to never forget who I am or where I came from. I think that’s so important for artists to remember because people are always saying you should do this or that. Always stay true to yourself and trust your instincts.
What is the one thing you want your fans to know about you?
That I’m here for them as much as they’re here for me! Some of them act shy sometimes and I really want to say that I’m exactly like they are, I don’t want them to think that this glamorous life they see portrayed on Instagram means that my life is better. I really want them to be able to look up to me as a friend. I already have a very friendly relationship with some of my fans through social media, just talking on direct messages and what not. I hope I get to meet every one of you in person one day.
If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be? Why?
This is a hard question for me because I love so many different genres of music and I have a favorite artist within each genre. One of my dream collaborations would have to be Post Malone because I’ve always wanted to work with a rapper and Post Malone is a crazy talented artist with a dreamy voice that makes me listen to each of his songs on repeat. He has such a special soul. Outside of rap, I also have dream producers for pop artists I’d love to collaborate with like Cashmere Cat and Zayn. Bon Iver and Imogen Hype would be such interesting collaborations as well… I mean all of these are dreams but my career is slowly happening and I’m going to do everything I can to make it happen for the album!
What’s next for you? What are you most looking forward to?
This summer I’m going to be recording new music in Sweden. I’m super excited to be getting back into the studio again and really putting my heart and soul into my music. I’m hopefully going to have a project to drop later this year as well as a few North American shows.
