Raffaella’s in-your-face aesthetic and sugar-coated sound feels so jarring and unsettling at times but in a way you can’t forget. Her ability to lace these strong messages into a pop melody is part of her unique charm. We did a little Q&A to get to know her better and find out what inspires her.
Act II came out this year, how does it continue your story as an artist?
Raffaella: I say more stuff about my life, like how I get sad and stuff.
Tell me about your song “Polly Pocket” what was the inspiration behind it?
Raffaella: I have an IUD and then my friends and I suddenly wrote about that
I love the aesthetic behind your music, how do you plan your visuals?
Raffaella: I ask Sarah if it’s ok and she helps me and I watch Telly Tubbies
I feel like pop music can hide deeper meanings, do you intentionally use music to mask the meaning behind the lyrics and make listeners read into it more?
Raffaella: Yeah I love to trick people.
What keeps you motivated to create?
Raffaella: Dying and ice cream.
What are you looking forward to at SXSW this year?
Raffaella: Playing music with my friends Jon and Isaac.
How important is it for you to have a community in the music industry? Has it been easy for you to find a community or has it been more challenging?
Raffaella: I found a community through Minnesota which has been awesome, I also have a community with my friends and family and I love them.
What do you want your fans to take away from your music?
Raffaella: I want them to be smarter because of it and feel prettier when they listen to it.
