What Is Music?

Music. What is it? It’s way more than it seems. Music is the art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color.

Music for me has always been a way to understand how other people feel when going through certain situations. Listening to someone else’s pain and seeing them turn it into a form of art for people to cope with is absolutely amazing. For example, breakups, I came across the song “I’m Goin’ Down” by Mary J. Blige after my boyfriend and I broke up; it was everything and more about how I felt about our relationship. It gave me an insight on something I had never dealt with and knowing someone else felt the exact same way I did made coping a little easier.
Music is something to escape to whether it’s to just listen to great rhythms or to listen to find a meaning in the lyrics. From Demi Lovato talking about her relationship with her dad, to Phases talking about the weather outside. I cannot tell you how many friendships I have based solely on music. What type of music you listen too says a lot about your personality and what you have been through. It’s a source of entertainment and the thrill of seeing someone you can relate to pour their heart on stage and show the different emotions they have been through is so exhilarating. If I am being honest I do not think I could live without music in my life.

My challenge to you is to tell five people, whether it’s friends or not, something about music. It can be your favorite song, favorite artist, favorite festival, or anything. Just go out and tell someone about music, you never know where it can take you.
