We all know that LA has an incredible music scene, but asides from the huge acts that dominate the charts there’s a whole independent scene that has been a subject of fixation to me for quite a while. One group in particular, Play Like A Girl seems to be at the forefront of every cult-favorite band right now. The group puts on shows featuring female performers, but other than that they host workshops, run their own label, and promote the hell out of up and coming acts. Growing up with a strong passion for blues and classic rock, Cobi is on a path to resurrect the guitar solo. His music is super unique; a bit of gospel with a strong R&B influence mixed with classic rock. Cobi received his first guitar as a gift from a family friend when he was just a kid. He was self-taught, learning to play by ear, and by the age of twelve Cobi knew music is what he wanted to pursue. His musical influences can be traced back to Prince, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and Bob Dylan. We sat down with Cobi at Hangout Fest and picked his brain about going viral on Spotify, his upcoming album, and why music should stay in schools.

It was beautiful we were there for two weeks and we definitely want to go back. A lot of our fans are international. It’s so cool how the music translates.” Charming Liars are a London to L.A. transplant band, but they just got back from touring Mexico and Brazil, an odd feat for a band on their level, but one that stands out because of that.
