Reuben And The Dark has this dreamy sound that I can’t shake. It’s looming and moody but also inspirational. We chatted about taking inspiration from dreams and getting personal with songs.
One of the best parts about the growing and adapting scene here in Nashville is the opportunity for acts to emerge in their own unique way. Back in 2014, I remember one of our local stations playing a track from a new rock pop band called Jet Black Alley Cat. Obviously, with a band name like that and a debut single titled “Poison”, they had my attention.
Fresh of the release of their new EP, Headfirst, we talk with Sub-Radio. The DC-based pop-rock band have gained recognition since their debut in 2016, steadily touring and playing live shows, while also continually releasing tracks during the 2017 year. The six-piece band, yes six, are hitting the road hard this summer so we caught up with them.
When our editor here at the New Nine told me to check out Mobley at Hangout Fest, I said “Mobley Who?” Mobley, an Austin-based one-man show, just came out with “Fresh Lies, Vol. I,” an enticing upbeat musical jolt of energy that catches you by the ears and has you dancing from start to finish. Mobley refers to “Fresh Lies, Vol. I” as a song cycle rather than an album, because it’s a part of a story project that he will continue for the rest of his career.
I was walking through Hangout Fest when I saw a man with sunglasses sitting on a bench wearing an “Artist” wristband. I went up to him and asked, “Are you Bahamas?” He laughed, and replied: “No, I wish.” It turns out this man was Hunter Porter, lead guitarist for Pacific Dub. He invited me to watch their set, and I’m so happy I did.
We fell in love with FLAVIA’s new song “Hateful” there’s this dark sound to it, but it’s undeniably catchy. It tackles the important issue of bullying, she’s not afraid to shy away from a tough subject. We chatted with her about finding her sound and sticking to her guts.
It would be difficult for me to find a band I’m more emotional about than KITTEN. When I first saw them at SXSW two years ago I became addicted.I’ve never seen a lead singer like Chloe Chaidez, who seems to sing so powerfully while also contorting her body on stage and maintaining a showmanship that the most iconic rock stars would envy. It was hypnotizing.
ELA Lindsey’s pop synths and smooth voice blend together to make an amazing combination. The Nashville-based artist is popping up on everyone’s radar and for good reason. At 29, she’s proof there’s never a wrong time do chase your dreams. Her single, “Healing Me Slow” just dropped last week and it’s safe to say we’re already obsessed!
Ghita (pronounced like “Rita) was raised all over the world. She spent time in Spain, Morocco, and Switzerland and that multi-cultural upbringing comes through in her music. Her song “Brand New” features her effortless voice over an intricate pop sound. We talk to her about her new music and what has been inspiring her lately.
Just days before they embark on their first ever tour with The New Nine favorite Jake Miller, we talk to Toronto electro-pop trio, NEW CITY. With their previous two releases “Coachella” and “Dirty Secrets” surpassing the 1 Million streams mark quickly last year, NEW CITY is hitting the summer hard with “Getting Closer”. Be on the lookout for these guys, this is just the beginning.
