The pop-punk band Boys Like Girls was the soundtrack to my teenage years and was the beginning of my love affair with Martin Johnson. Fast forward to about this time last year and I received a new song recommendation from a friend. Immediately I knew the familiar. Martin Johnson’s latest band, The Night Game, provided my life with the 80s pop soundtrack I never knew I needed.
Gin Wigmore’s voice is ridiculously captivating. She’s been busy in the studios working on her album due next year, but also she’s been very busy being a mom. Having relocated from New Zealand over 12 years ago wasn’t exactly easy for Wigmore. She says, “I made the final leap after 7 years in Australia and a few failed relationships. It was pretty terrifying moving and completely starting from square one again but as soon as I got my click of pals, I was set. I think that’s one of the main things you need to get sorted when you move to a new city for the first time, find good friends ASAP!”
All of us at The New Nine have some pretty eclectic music taste, so album of the year can be difficult. Since the year is now coming to an end, our contributors weigh-in on their top albums of the year.
Cody Fry has had a pretty unconventional career. He started singing in radio and TV commercials when he was a kid. “McDonald’s Happy Meals, stuff like that,” he says. “My father is a composer and arranger, so I always grew up surrounded by music.”
Isabelle is an up-and-comer pushing her way to the front of the crowd. At the end of September she released a music video for her single “Unlabeled”, a body-positive anthem that praises acceptance of all backgrounds and extols the virtues of inner beauty. It’s a song that I wish had come out when I hit puberty. Perhaps then I would have felt more in tune with my plus-size figure and avoided the toxic yo-yo dieting where eating a bag of unsalted popcorn counted as a meal.
It was Thursday after Hurricane Harvey when I went to go see Sylvan Esso in Austin at Stubbs, they had to cancel their Houston show but promised to make it up later. They were even using this opportunity in Austin to collect supplies and donate funds to relief efforts. That just goes to show how Sylvan Esso is more than a musical act.
