Houston is known for its booming rap scene that started the careers of Slim Thug, Bun B, and of course, Beyonce, but Houston has more depth than that. There’s a thriving indie rock scene that goes pretty unnoticed. One of those standouts is Alex Riddle, whose sound is like a mix between The National and Jeff Buckley. Alex says, “Houston has a ton of untapped untethered talent shooting every which way.”
While I was on my honeymoon this past October, one of my good friends Brooks made my weekly playlist. Included in that week’s playlist was a standout track from Buffalo rock band Made Violent. With their recent release of “Unamused” and “Sunrise”, I talked with the band’s drummer, Justin Acee.
It’s been quite the year for indie artists and although our Albums of The Year have featured big acts like Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar to up-and-comers Anna of the North and Julien Baker, that doesn’t mean we don’t still have our eyes on newer artists that are still paving their way and making waves in the music world. There are so many artists that we loved this year and it’s impossible to name them all but here are some of our favorite new acts to keep up with.
Ali B is taking time after school to talk to me about her career, the 17-year-old has been making waves in the EDM world with her sunny beats and charming vocals. She says, “When I was growing up I loved listening to music, I loved Hannah Montana and Selena Gomez. I’d go see them in concert and I thought I wanted to be up there every single day doing what I love.”
*repeat repeat is sure to be on repeat (get it??) in your mind after you listen to their addictive beats. I spoke with frontman, Jared Corder, about the group’s beginnings and their new music. The group is comprised of Andy Herrin (drummer) and Kristyn Corder (vocalist/keys), and Jared, of course.
Dylan Hyde’s music is so sparkling an full of energy that you can’t help but smile when you listen to it. His song “Clearly” is a shimmering bop with his pristine vocals taking center stage.

Dalton Rapattoni may not be a household name yet, but keep him on your radar because this guy is seriously the coolest. He’s known for being one of the Top 3 finalists on Fox Television’s hit show, American Idol. Dalton began his journey as an artist at age 12 and since then his musical career has taken off.
When I first saw The Rigs new video for “When We Were Young” it just felt so nostalgic and beautiful. The song is laced with tribal chants and light vocals. I talked to TJ Stafford and Caitlin Parrott about the making of the video and their musical chemistry.
SondorBlue is the perfect soundtrack when you’re just driving with the windows down along a coastline. The group is a quartet from Charleston, South Carolina so it kind of fits. The group formed at Hilton Head before relocating to Charleston.
