Your Guide To Musical Mansplaining

emilytreadgold #2, Editorial

The other day I was at a show with my friend and this guy across from me took an interest in my opinions on music. By “took an interest” I mean he decided to tell me how everything I was saying was stupid and I obviously didn’t know what I was talking about, but since he was older and man he understood ~the industry~ way more than little me. Now, here at The New Nine, we believe that everyone’s opinions on music are valid, but we especially like to stand up for young women because so few music publications do.

LANY’s Debut Album Is Sheer Perfection

Sam: I have to credit my two friends, Wade and Trey, for convincing me to listen to Los Angeles-based trio, LANY. LANY’s songs are exactly what you would imagine California is like. No matter where you see them perform, you’re instantly transported to the west coast. My first LANY experience was intimate, lustful, and just real. Paul Klein’s presence, with Jake Goss drumming and Les Priest providing synth beats, created one of the most personable performances I’ve witnessed. Not to mention each lyric that echoes from Paul is ridiculously relatable.

From The Outside: The Anxiously Awaited Hey Violet Album

I’m an impatient person so after two EPs it was natural to crave a debut album from Los Angeles-based alt pop band Hey Violet. The group has come a long way since their I Can Feel It days, but traces of the rocker vibes can be detected in various songs. Since being signed by 5 Seconds of Summer’s label through Capitol Records and working with Julian Bunetta (who’s worked with One Direction) you just knew this group was bound for success.

Halsey’s Hopeless Fountain Kingdom Is A Masterpiece

Okay, we’re about to dive into the layers of my life that I don’t think I have ever mentioned – at least not out loud. I’m not sure if I’m even proud to admit that I once had a tumblr. I really used it for the 1D gifs and trying to be one of the lucky fans who Taylor Swift followed. While we’re here discussing 1D and Taylor, we all watched the Haylor relationship unfold, right? I know, I know. What the hell does this have to do with Halsey?!

‘Harry Styles’ is Harry Styles Through and Through

emilytreadgold #6, Editorial

It’s taken me about a week to synthesize my thoughts around “Harry Styles,” the debut album from my very favorite dude, but I finally feel like I have calmed down enough to put words on a page. I want to start by saying I am trying to make this as unbiased and as thoughtful as possible, but let’s be honest, we all know I can’t say a bad word about Harry and that’s why y’all love (or hate) me. Anyway, it would be a vast understatement to say that I wasn’t on the edge of my seat for a literal year waiting for this album, but I was a little nervous – no one knew what #SoloStyles was going to sound like, and I was really hoping it would be something I enjoyed. Harry has an interesting taste in music, so it had the potential to be anything.

Our Entire SXSW Recap

I was so equally excited and nervous for SXSW this year. I think it is hands-down the most important music event of the year. The bands that are performing aren’t your usual festival round-makers, they’re up-and-comers, and there’s just endless possibilities to meet new people in the industry. All opportunities await!
